How To Make Perfect Bok Choy Soup

  • Prep and clean the bok choy: To eliminate any dirt, thoroughly rinse the bok choy under cold water and trim the tough ends of the stalks to remove any yellow leaves.
  • Choose a flavorful broth: Choose a high-quality vegetable or chicken broth for the soup’s base. If you opt for store-bought broth, choose a low-sodium option so you can have more control over the saltiness of your dish.
  • Enhance flavors with aromatic ingredients: Infuse the soup with delightful flavors by adding sesame oil, minced garlic, the white part of green onions, and shredded ginger. Sauté them for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Bring the broth to a boil: Carefully pour the chicken broth and soy sauce into the pot, then bring it to a boil.
  • Add mushrooms and bok choy: Add sliced mushrooms and chopped bok choy to the simmering broth. For larger portions of bok choy, cut it into quarters for the perfect size.
  • Simmer for tender bok choy: Allow the soup to simmer gently for 5-6 minutes or until the bok choy becomes tender. Adjust the saltiness by adding more soy sauce or sea salt according to your taste.
  • Garnish the dish: Sprinkle a generous amount of sliced green onions and sesame seeds on top of each bowl for added flavor and an appealing presentation.

Garlic: In place of minced garlic, you can use garlic powder or garlic paste for convenience, adjusting the quantity according to your taste preferences.

Chicken broth: To make a vegetarian or vegan version, you can replace the chicken broth with vegetable or mushroom broth, maintaining the savory flavor profile.

Soy sauce: Tamari sauce or liquid aminos can be used as alternatives to soy sauce if you prefer a gluten-free option or want to vary the taste slightly.

Ginger: Fresh ginger is preferable for its distinct flavor, but if you don’t have it on hand, you can substitute it with ground ginger or ginger paste, adjusting the quantity to your liking.

Sesame oil: If sesame oil is unavailable, you can use peanut oil, sunflower oil, or any other mild-flavored oil to add a hint of richness to your soup.
